Traffic Control

Biosecurity generally requires human and animal traffic control.

Humans
• Lock doors
• Supply properly sanitised footwear, coveralls and headgear for authorised visitors to wear before entering
• Sanitise hands before entering or leaving the farm

Animals

Cats can carry Pasteurella multocida strains, which can cause disease in poultry. Recently they have been shown to be susceptible to avian influenza viruses. Unless confined to the building they could easily introduce such infections.

Other animals carrying disease are:
• vermin, such as rats and mice
• wild birds
• predators.

Deterring animal threats

Protection from predators is almost impossible to achieve when birds are kept on a range, but steps can be taken to minimise the dangers.

• Screen openings in buildings with a properly sized protective wiring
• Keep grass and bushes trimmed a few feet either side of the fence (this way, you can spot burrowing rodents and deny predators the benefit of cover)
• Train a guard dog to patrol the fenced area
• Keep out wild birds by covering game bird opens with good size netting
